As military journalists we travel throughout the world meeting cultures as foreign to Americans as possible, or those in our own backyard. A big part of getting to know people is through their food.
Recently while on assignment to Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., I had the opportunity to sample one of those local delicacies while waiting for my flight at Denver International Airport. Rocky Mountain oysters are one of those foods that are consumed with indifference and delight by people used to them, but scare the transient airport traveler.
I can honestly say they aren’t bad. Tasting a little like chicken-fried steak and bearing no resemblance to their pre-plucked state, I think I would enjoy them if I didn’t know what they were. However, knowing what they were I feel a certain amount of bravery for having tried them.
It’s times like this that I truly appreciate being a military journalist and traveling. I get the opportunity to experience more than a base or mission, I get to experience the communities that support the military. When in Rome so to speak.
